About retaining walls, paths and paving
Do I need council approval for a retaining wall?
Not for a wall up to 600 mm high that sits at least 1 m from each boundary and from easements, sewers and water mains, 2 m from other retaining walls, and is properly drained (NSW exempt development rules). Higher walls need approval, usually with an engineer's design (complying development rules), and the exemption doesn't apply on some land in Byron Shire, such as bushfire-prone land (Byron Shire Council).
What's the most affordable wall?
Treated pine sleepers usually cost least; concrete sleepers and stone cost more and last longer.
